Know the rules

Three VAT rules that catch online sellers out

Most sellers learn about VAT from a marketplace warning or a letter from a tax office. These are the situations to watch.

1

Stock in a warehouse abroad

If Amazon FBA or a 3PL stores your goods in another country, you usually need a VAT number there before your first sale. There is no threshold for foreign sellers.

2

Over €10,000 of EU cross-border sales

Above this EU-wide threshold you must charge the customer's local VAT rate. The One-Stop-Shop lets you report it all in one return.

3

Selling into the UK from abroad

Overseas sellers have no UK registration threshold. Marketplaces collect VAT on some sales, but UK stock and imports usually still need a UK VAT number.
